With a history that goes back more than 80 years to 1919 when Henry Sonnenberg started a machinery distribution and manufacturing company in Dusseldorf, Germany marking the origin of the group and later expanded his operations to Holland and the UK. He founded the Douglas Machinery Corporation when he moved to the United States at the outbreak of World War II. In association with Joe Hunter, a gifted inventor, Henry Sonnenberg established the Hunter Douglas corporation in 1946. They developed a revolutionary continuous casting process for aluminium and novel aluminium strip processing equipment. Modern metal venetian blinds were created using this manufacturing technology. They then produced and commercialized these blinds. This revolutionary new product quickly gained leadership in the American market.
