safety

I am about to be a new mother and am busy trying to decorate the baby’s nursery. I need to know about safety precautions that have to do with window treatments. I know some are very dangerous and should not be hung in the nursery. Are there any window treatments that are made specifically made for nurseries and babies??

There are a number of window coverings that are suitable for any room in a home except the baby’s room. Among these are floor-length curtains or drapes of any style, for once the crawling stage begins, it will be easy for the baby to grab these, pull them down on top of himself and possibly suffocate. Blinds with long pull-cords are also a no-no, especially looped cords, as a baby can easily get these wrapped around her neck. Curtains that end at the windowsill are perhaps the safest option.

When deciding where to put the crib in your baby’s nursery, keep more than design in mind. Create a safety zone around the crib by positioning it away from windows. Window blinds pose a particular hazard because your baby’s neck could become trapped in the cords that raise the blinds or run through the slats. If the crib must be near a window, either cut off the pull cords or use cord shorteners, safety tassels, or wind-ups to keep them out of reach.

Window blinds sold since November 2000 have attachments on the pull cords that prevent a loop from forming between the slats.

Never put a crib, child bed, or furniture near window blinds or drapery. Children can strangle on window cords or can fall through screens. If local fire codes permit window guards, install them. Make sure that all drapery or window blind cords are out of the children’s reach. To keep cords out of reach of children, use these devices: clamp or clothes pin, tie the cord to itself, tie-down device, or take the cord loop and cut it in half to make two separate cords.
